The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
