Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
As any prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
